Caroline Rumbelow was born at Mildenhall, Suffolk, UK, on 20th December 1843 and was christened on 5th May 1844.
She accompanied her family to Port Adelaide on the Pestonjee Bomanjee and arrived with them at Encounter Bay on 5th January 1855 aged eleven.
Caroline grew up among the aborigines and knew several of them well, especially ‘King Pole’, who was to help end local tribal warfare.
Caroline married John Rymill Cakebread at the Tabernacle at Encounter Bay on 7th January 1861. John was born in Banbury, Oxford, England on 5th March 1839. John emigrated from Banbury, arriving in Port Adelaide, South Australia on, 22nd October 1849 aboard the “Abberton”.
In February of 1859, just before his 20th birthday, John Cakebread left South Australia for the Victorian goldfields. John returned to Encounter Bay in late 1860 and after their marriage John and Caroline together with Alice and Cain Jelliff returned to the Bendigo diggings. The Cakebreads returned with half a sovereign, 6 chairs and a gold brooch.
When Caroline was 82 years old she gave an interview to “The Mail”, an Adelaide newspaper, and the following information is taken from the article printed on 4th December 1926.
Where the township of Victor Harbor now stands was a sandy waste when her family arrived from Port Adelaide in 1855, with only one house occupied by the Trooper. This house was on the point where the present causeway commences and was known as Policeman’s Point.
Encounter Bay, however, was quickly settled with many houses being established. Malen 1st and 2nd, according to Caroline, inaugurated tourism by inducing the first visitors from the city to spend a holiday at Encounter Bay.
Caroline recalled an encounter a family member had with “Swell Face Jack”, a huge aborigine who demanded flour. When told there was no flour he noticed a small quantity in the corner of the kitchen so he took it despite being threatened with a shotgun.
As he ran off she peppered him with shot. This also happened on another occasion in much the same way and the victim came back and asked for a pin to pick out the shot.
As a girl, Caroline worked in a shop at Pt Elliott, which because of the railway line from Goolwa and the percieved sheltered harbour of Horseshoe Bay was established before Victor Harbor. She travelled to and from work along the beach, a walk of quite a few miles and as she walked she would crochet – she was well known for her beautiful lace work.
Caroline was famous far and wide as the heroine in the book “Paving the Way” by Simpson Newland. The hero of the book was Simpson Newland himself. They were reputed to be youthful sweethearts and the book is based on their friendship with many things in the book being true, but equally many things being “mere romance”
In 1865 John joined the Government Roads Board, holding that position until 1910. In 1890 he supervised the strengthening of the Hindmarsh and Inman Bridges. John was one of the earliest district cricket players. He owned a large acreage at Waitpinga and in 1903 John & Caroline moved to Walkerville to retire.
After a few years they returned to Victor Harbor, building “Banbury” in Torrens Street. John & Caroline lived there for the rest of their lives. John died of a cerebral hemorrhage on 8th August 1914, at the age of 75, and is buried in the Victor Harbor Cemetery.
Caroline continued to reside in Victor Harbor until the time of her death on 10th September 1935, at the age of 92. She is also buried in the Victor Harbor Cemetery.

[3] Caroline Lottie Cakebread (6th child) was born at Encounter Bay on 15th January 1875 and married Albert Howard Warland on 26th September 1900. Bert Warland was somewhat of a legend around Encounter Bay. Those of us who remember him as an older man when we were young, liken him to “Rumpole of the Bailey”. History shows him as a hard worker with an enormous sense of community. The information following is based on notes made by Archibald McLean, a relative of Bert’s mother, Harriet Warland nee McLean.
Bert was born at Strathalbyn and grew to be a tall, broad shouldered man with strong features and thick black hair and moustache. In 1900, when Bert and Caroline were married, they were Sunday School teachers at the Congregational Church at Victor Harbor. He had a deep bass voice and sang at concerts, sometimes duets with Caroline, who was a soprano. They moved from a cottage in Victoria Street to the family home on Mill Road, Encounter Bay.
When 26, Bert followed O.B. Hutchinson as District Clerk of the Encounter Bay Council and bought out his partner in a property at Back Valley. He split his time between Council duties and clearing the land, which included fertile swamps and grew high quality vegetables. A small dwelling was erected on the land and Edward, Bert’s father, spent a lot of time there doing odd jobs. Bert donated land for a school at Back Valley and also for St Francis Church, which opened in 1947. The family retained the property until 1969.
Bert and Caroline had six children, three of which died at the age of 23, a strange coincidence, and another died aged 5.
Lonnen died on 17th July 1917 (5)
Howard died on 8th January 1925 (23)
Jean died on 28th July 1927 (23)
Blythe died on 22nd May 1933 (23)
These tragic events greatly affected the family and Bert threw himself into civic matters. He became Town Clerk as well as District Clerk in 1914, and was Secretary of the New Year’s Sports Committee. His efforts saw the opening of the South Coast District Hospital in 1929, the Soldier’s Gardens after WW1 and the sea-wall along the sea-side of the Soldier’s Gardens. The local oval, the Victor Harbor High School and many other civic improvements were due to him including his untiring promotion of tourism.
His manner was brusque but he had a kind and generous heart. For 51 years he was Clerk of the District Council and he was a familiar figure in his horse and sulky. In 1923 he was appointed a Justice of the Peace and was awarded an MBE in 1943 for outstanding service to the district. He is remembered by Warland Avenue, Warland Reserve and Warland House at the Victor Harbor High School. Caroline supported him in all he did, though ever sad at the loss of her children and the fact that her two remaining daughters left the district when they married. She was organist at the Church, which opened at Encounter Bay in 1918.
Caroline died in 1945 at the age of 71. Bert retired in 1950 and passed in 1960 at the age of 86.
Bert and Caroline had six children; Howard, Jean, Lorne, Edna, Blythe and Lonnen.

John moved to Footscray Vic in about 1898 and married Ellen at the Gordon Street Baptist Church, Footscray. Ellen made her own beautiful wedding dress. For a time they had a fruit shop in Buckley Street Footscray and their first two children, George and Donald, were born there.
The family then moved to Broken Hill in about 1904 where John worked in the mines as a mill-hand. Ellen returned to Footscray for the birth of May in 1906 then three more sons were born at Broken Hill. John continued to work in the mines on day, night and afternoon shifts until ill-health forced him to retire in 1944. John died in 1949 and Ellen in 1963 and both are buried in the Broken Hill Cemetery, NSW. John and Ellen had six children; George, Donald, May, Jack, Fred and Ross.
[4] George Rymill Cakebread was born at Footscray on 28th July 1901 and married Grace Lillian Roper on 9th April 1924. George, known as “Rym” was about two years old when his family moved to Broken Hill and he grew up in the bush hunting birds and rabbits for food. On one such excursion he was shot in the leg and brought into town in a horse drawn ambulance. On another trip Rym and his brothers “pinched” some fowls and were cooking them on an open fire in a kerosene tin. The Police arrived so Rym, quick as a flash, threw his singlet over the chooks and convinced the Police that he was doing his washing. They enjoyed their meal when the policemen left.
After working for a while at Broken Hill Rym went to Red Cliffs picking grapes, then worked as a carpenter for the Pumping Station. He met and married Lillian and lived in a bag humpy on the “Common” near a pumping station. Rym then built a bigger and better home on Lillian’s brother’s land.
Nevertheless, it only had hessian walls, as money was tight. Rym saved a man from being sucked into the intake pipe of the pump and drowning by jumping in and pulling him out while working at the pumping station. He went back to Broken Hill where he worked as a carpenter in the mines. After about five years Rym was maliciously “sacked” under dubious circumstances and moved to South Melbourne where he worked for the local council and then Morrison Bros. where he helped rebuild the “Capitol Theatre”. After Lillian died in 1967, Rym moved to Benalla to his son’s home where he died in 1975. Rym and Lillian had two children; Beatrice and Keith.

After the war he owned a radio and electrical business at Benalla for a time, then he gained a Cinematographic Licence and was operator at the Regal Cinema, Benalla and then the Drive-In. At the same time he ran a radio servicing business from home, and extended to TV. In 1972 Keith joined the Forests Commission of Victoria as a Radio Technician. Keith and Mary had three daughters.
[4] Donald Roy Cakebread was born at Footscray on 24th December 1902 and married Eileen (Biddy) O’Connell in 1930. Don also moved to Broken Hill as an infant and enjoyed the outback with Rym. He started as a Winding Engine Cleaner at the South Mine and Power House before becoming a fitter and turner. To gain experience on motor vehicles he worked at Sydney and Newcastle before the Lead Bonus drew him back to the mines at Broken Hill as a fitter and turner.
At 19, Don opened a shop repairing dolls and gramophones. This developed and grew into a Radio and Electrical shop and his brother Jack worked with him. Don joined the Australian Army on 14th April 1942 and when discharged on 17th October 1945 was a corporal attached to BH Det Coy 6 Battalion. Biddy died giving birth to their first child as did the baby. After several years Don courted and then married Biddy’s friend, Doris Rosalie Butcher nee Milbourne (known as Rosalie) who had been a bridesmaid at their wedding. Her husband had been killed in a workplace accident. Don and Rosalie had a child and there was also a daughter, Gloria, from Rosalie’s first marriage.

Cadets and police from Broken Hill killed the Turks.
At 17, May went to Adelaide to work but got homesick and returned after six months. The family left Broken Hill in 1960 and lived in Windang, NSW for 13 years. In 1973 they moved to Para Hills SA, where Walter died in 1975. May and Walter had three children; [5] Joan Lorraine, Norma Ellen and Donald Kevin Beck.

He stayed with relatives in Sydney to have an artificial leg fitted and their daughter, Ellen, later became his wife.
In 1945 Jack took over the Radio and Electrical business from his brother Don and continued the tradition including selling radios and TVs in the outback and erecting antennas. In 1975 Jack sold his business to his nephew Roger Collins and unfortunately suffered ill health in retirement and died on 26th November 1980. Jack and Ellen had two sons, one of whom was stillborn.
