Lawrence William Rumbelow

Lawrence William (Lawrie) Rumbelow was born at Encounter Bay on 23rd April 1900 and married Iris Murla Bourne on 3rd December 1927.
Lawrie was one of 10 children of Henry and Mary Rumbelow. He became a bootmaker, moving from Seacliff to Mt Barker then to Nairne and finally to Murray Bridge from where he enlisted in the Australian Army in 1943. He saw service in Darwin with the 10/48 Infantry Battalion, and at discharge was a Corporal with 10 Battalion.
In later life Lawrie moved to Encounter Bay where he continued as a bootmaker and, for many years, was the postmaster at the small Post Office at Yilki which opened for a few hours each week day.
Mr. Rumbelow took a keen interest in his church, the Yilki Congregational Church, and was secretary for thirteen years and also treasurer for a considerable period. He was the church representative on the committee for the restoration of the Tabernacle Cemetery.
In 1955 Lawrie and his cousin Kennith Stanley Rumbelow worked on the arrangements for the 100 Year Anniversary celebration.
Lawrie and Iris had two children; Peter and Ruth.
His death occurred at the Repatriation General Hospital, Daw Park, on January 26 1969. He was 68.

The death occurred at the Repatriation General Hospital, Daw Park, on January 26 1969. He was 68.
The son of the late Mr. Henry Rumbelow, he was born at Encounter Bay but later moved from the district. He lived at Murray Bridge before returning to Yilki about 16 years ago. During the Second World War he served with the 10/48th Bat-talion in New Guinea.
Mr. Rumbelow took a keen interest in his church, the Yilki Congregational Church, and was secretary for thirteen years and also treasurer for a considerable period. He was the church representative on the committee for the restoration of the Tabernacle Cemetery.
He was in charge of the Yilki post office for many years and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. The Yilki Church was crowded for the funeral service, which was conducted by the Rev. L. G. C. Pleass. The burial took place at the Victor Harbour Cemetery. Mr. Rumbelow is survived by his widow and a son and daughter.
