VICTOR HARBOR - John Crompton has been re-elected as mayor of Victor Harbor after a large turn-out to Saturday's council election. Many people believe the higher turnout was due to the prominence of the mayoral contest between Mr Crompton and former councillor, Jon Deakin. Mr Crompton polled 1708 votes compared to Mr Deakin's 719.
The mayoral election attracted 2441 voters compared to 1750 last year. Mr Crompton said the presence of a competitor helped stimulate the interest of voters. "There is certainly a benefit to local democracy when there is a contest," he said.
Four new faces will join the council table - Kay Ewens, Enid Sutton, Brenton Hutchison and Tony Gelling.
Standing councillors re-elected were Liz Cooper, Keith Loeser, Rae Parker, Alan Whittle, Sue Johnson and Deane Michelmore. The unsuccessful candidates were: Leon Button, Klaus Packeisen and Geoffrey Richards.
