Over the years, many contacts have been made and and tales told about Rumbelows (and their descendants) both from across Australia and around the world.
The company was established in 1949 by Sydney Rumbelow when he opened his first shop in Hatfield, Hertfordshire. The chain was extended to more shops throughout the 1950s, before being acquired by Thorn Electrical Industries in the early 1960s. In 1969, Thorn extended the Rumbelows name across other regional chains it had bought, including Fred Dawes, NEMS and Strothers.
In 1989, the remaining Rumbelow stores were sold to Radio Rentals, which had merged with Thorn Electrical Industries the previous year. With its core business removed, Rumbelows sought a new identity as a more conventional (non-rental) retailer, even adding computers to the product mix.
However, the business continued to make losses and Thorn closed the remaining 285 Rumbelows shops 1995.
Matthew Rumbelow (UK) is a writer and published author. He is head of project communication engaged to provide communication support to the programme director, leadership team and wider construction team responsible for building the world's largest offshore wind farm, Hornsea 2.
Outside the world of internal communication, Mathew has self-published his first children’s book, The Strange Tales of the Alphabet Children.
Enjoy the poetic wit of Matthew Rumbelow's cautionary tale classic The Strange Tales of the Alphabet Children.
Perfect for teenagers and older children, this compendium of poems each tell a tale of a child who didn't heed their parents sage advice, often meeting an unfortunate (and grisly) end. Each tale has been illustrated by myself, printed full page on beautiful glossy 170gsm silk paper.
About the Author
I was born in 1973, and grew up in Gretton, a smallish village in north Northamptonshire. As the youngest of four by a sizeable margin, I was generally left to my own devices. From memory, I spent most of my time roaming the countryside, playing computer games or making Airfix kits.
After the usual treadmill of school, exams and university, I moved to London to train as a solicitor; a career that I thought I might enjoy, but ended up mostly hating. Parting company with the legal profession a few years after qualifying (a blessed release both for me and the legal profession), I side-stepped into management consultancy and eventually gravitated towards internal communication.
When not building things for my two children or repairing our crumbling home, I spend my remaining free time writing, hillwalking, taking photographs or generally ‘tinkering’ in my study. This latter activity seems to occupy an increasingly large part of my leisure time. I also have an unhealthy fixation with fancy dress, which I blame on my parents (who both loved amateur dramatics).
Getting a great night’s sleep continues to be one of my main life goals.

Llanelli Town Association Football Club are a semi-professional Welsh football club that plays in the Cymru South, UK.
The club's home ground is Stebonheath Park, which has a capacity of 3,700. In recent years, The Reds have played numerous European games away from their home ground due to the limited seating capacity. Games have been played at Stradey Park, the former home of the Llanelli Scarlets rugby team, The Liberty Stadium in Swansea, Richmond Park, Carmarthen and Parc y Scarlets, Llanelli.
The first ground improvement started in the summer of 2008 by building a seated stand to accommodate 300 supporters. This takes the Stebonheath Park seated capacity to 1,003 – therefore making it a UEFA-compliant stadium for European football.
